Annular Groove Graphite Heat Exchangers

GAB Neumann annular groove heat exchangers heat or cool highly corrosive liquids — hydrochloric and sulphuric acid, halogenated solvents — in fused, gasket-free impervious graphite. Made in Germany by GAB Neumann, a member of the Mersen group.

Series

RA series

Corrosion resistant on one side: the corrosive product in graphite, a non-corrosive utility such as cooling water, steam or thermal oil on the other.

−1/+6 (+10) bar · −30 (−60) to +180 (+200) °C

WA series

Corrosion resistant on both sides: heat transfer and heat recovery between two corrosive liquids.

−1/+6 (+10) bar · −30 (−60) to +180 (+200) °C

How it is built

Fused graphite discs with annular grooves, GAB Neumann

Fused graphite discs

Grooves machined into impervious graphite discs, fused into one stack — no gaskets, no leak paths.

GAB GPX1 / GPX1T · GPX2 low resin

Graphite disc with spiral wavy groove, GAB Neumann

Spiral or wavy groove

1 to 21 parallel grooves in three widths; the optional wavy groove adds turbulence.

Self-cleaning · resists fouling

Process and service channels

Product and utility run in separate groove channels; heat passes through the graphite wall.

Applications

Typical duties

  • Heating or cooling hydrochloric and sulphuric acid
  • Halogenated solvents
  • Thermal oil heating of corrosive products
  • Heat transfer and heat recovery between two corrosive liquids
  • Feed preheater for a column sump
  • Biofuel production (wavy groove)

Design

Materials & standards

  • Phenolic resin-impregnated graphite GAB GPX1 / GPX1T; GPX2 with low resin content (optional)
  • Pressure plates and flanges: carbon steel (stainless optional); tie rods, nuts, springs: stainless steel
  • AD 2000 Merkblatt / PED 2014/68/EU, or ASME Code
  • Options: carbon-fibre reinforcement, ATEX version
  • Resin-free surfaces — no black particle release
